Two weeks ago there was a complete and utter failure at 1&1 Web Hosting. We don’t know what happened, and we don’t know how many sites were destroyed. We can’t even get anyone at 1&1 to admit that “mistakes were made.” Here’s how I imagine that they fixed the problem:
At any rate…we are back (no thanks to 1&1), and let’s hope we can stay. A little freshening up seemed in order. Something more “make out-of-staters jealous of Californians.” Enjoy!
In searching the web for others suffering this problem along with me, I came across your post.
I’m sorry you had to endure this as well. I went the same route in getting a new web host and all. The sites I host beyond my own blog are just family members sites so the outage was simply an annoyance, until they failed to do anything about the problem. Except for those awful fake sincere apology emails from their so-called tech support.
Still waiting on a response from the Complaints Dept. I’m guessing it won’t be coming any time soon.
Congrats on getting back up and running.
Happy New Year
Our data was never found, but the databases were intact. We rebuilt from those and a backup from three months ago. We’re bringing back some other sites one by one. We’ll be backing up very often in the future, and I have learned a lot about MySQL.
For their part, after offering one month’s free hosting, and our replying that one year would be more like it, 1&1 did give us a year’s free hosting.
We did look at a few others, mostly Dreamhost, but decided that (on the mass hosting level) they were all the same and prone to the same problems.
