  1. Julchen is still an “Empress in Training.”

But she is doing good, isn’t she?

She is on a diet right now and has already lost two pounds. One more to go and she is perfect again. When the critters were at the vet in January (in preparation for their stay at the cat spa while we were away) the vet came in, saw her and said: “What a splendid looking big tom.”

She was quite taken aback when being told that Julchen is anything but a tom. However, we all decided there and then that she had to lose some weight and the project is rolling along fine. She does not like it, but what can a cat do? No opposable thumbs – no opening of fridge doors by oneself.

  2. Yes, my cats are on diets too, and liking it not at all. “big tom”. Oh, the shame of it. If you could have seen it, I’ll bet Julchen blushed.

I know my poor cats look at me when I’m doling out their food and think “And when are you going to put your fat arse on a diet?”

What do you feed Their Imperial Highnesses? Ours are stuck with dry food. After a lot of trial and error, I ended up keeping them on Pro Plan for Sensitive Stomachs. Works as well as anything.

That really is such an impressive picture of Julchen. So beautiful. She looks a bit like some of the figurines I have of Bast.

  3. Thanks for the compliments re. Julchen. I will not pass them on – this cat is conceited enough as it is.

Food: The resident kitties eat a brand of tin food called “Wellness”, produced by a company called Old Mother Hubbard. They usually get some dry food on the side, never more that two tablespoons max. per meal (well, not now), there I feed “Katz-N-Flocken.”

On Sundays they get their treat – some “Feline Greenies.” But that is more like chocolates – a few of the nibbles, and that’s it. For these Greenies they would do anything. Even Iko-Chan dances on her hind legs to get at this delicacy held over her head; and Iko-Chan usually dances for nothing and nobody.

  4. I tried greenies for my cats. Turned up their pink little noses. I’ve tried all sorts of healthy cat treats. No love. They like the cheap treats from the dollar store. I don’t understand it at all. I don’t give them treats often, because I don’t really trust the ingredients in the cheapies to be that healthy.

  5. Well, there is no accounting for taste. The Empress and her minion love, love, love Greenies. Otherwise their preferences are quite different: Iko-Chan would kill (literally) for tri tip or chicken. Julchen turns her nose on those treats, but she freaks out with delight at goat cheese.

I can understand that cats love meat – but have you ever met a feline preferring cheese?

  6. Nope, never know a cheese eating kitty.

Every time is see the picture of Julchen, I smile. There needs to be a caption contest for it. I know she must be saying something.

  7. Wow, I just reread the prior comment and noticed all the mistakes. It looks as if it was written by a near-illiterate.

  8. Okay, but that really is the most extraordinary photo. She looks like a sculpture, but yet it’s obvious too that it’s a photo of a real cat. Her expression is so…cat-like. It’s the perfect mix of astonishment and arrogance.
